Renesas FT 5000 & FT 6050 End-of-Life issue

The end-of-life of the FT 5000 and FT 6050 chipsets introduces significant challenges for retailers, manufacturers and solution providers relying on IFSF-LON infrastructure.

The Environment

Supporting modern forecourt network infrastructure

For decades, IFSF-LON has been the backbone of communication between dispensers, payment terminals, tank gauges, forecourt controllers and point-of-sale systems. Across Europe, thousands of fuel retail environments continue to rely on this infrastructure for daily operations.

The FT 5000 and FT 6050 smart transceivers have played a critical role in enabling this communication layer across the forecourt ecosystem.

The problem

A key technology dependency has reached end-of-life

In March 2025, Renesas announced the End-of-Life of the FT 5000 and FT 6050 chipset family. With production discontinued and no direct replacement currently available, organisations face increasing challenges around maintenance, support and long-term system sustainability.

Many retailers, manufacturers and solution providers now depend on ageing technology that was never designed for today’s long-term connectivity requirements.

Key concerns

The challenge

Balancing operational continuity with future modernization

The industry cannot simply replace existing infrastructure overnight. Large numbers of forecourt environments still rely on TP/FT-10 cabling and IFSF-LON communication, making immediate migration unrealistic.

The challenge is finding a practical path forward that maintains operational stability while enabling the gradual transition towards IP-based and API-driven architectures.

The industry response

Practical migration paths are already emerging

While no direct replacement currently exists, the industry is actively exploring alternatives to reduce dependency on the FT 5000 and FT 6050 chipsets.
Current developments include:

Alternative LON software stacks

IFSF/IP gateways

Hybrid LON/IP architectures

TCP/IP-based forecourt communication

OpenRetailing API initiatives
This transition will require close collaboration between retailers, manufacturers and technology partners to ensure operational continuity while preparing for the future.
